Care4Animals: A Microlearning Platform for Empowering Farmers with Bite-Sized Animal Wellness Knowledge
Care4Animals is a mobile-first microlearning platform designed to improve livestock welfare among small-scale farmers in rural Africa. Built around Welttierschutzstiftung (WTS) animal welfare teaching modules, it will deliver concise, evidence-based tutorials on animal care, disease prevention, and farm management. To overcome digital access gaps, Care4Animals will employ a hybrid delivery model: a mobile app for smartphone users and SMS-based access for basic feature phones. This approach will ensure inclusivity regardless of internet connectivity or device type. All content will be multilingual and culturally adapted, using local examples to enhance relevance and understanding.
Development and collaboration will center on the WTS teaching modules, with veterinarians and extension officers working alongside WTS content specialists to ensure technical accuracy and practical field application. Pilot testing in two regions will be informed by baseline surveys, local radio outreach, and farmer group engagement. Evaluation will combine platform usage analytics, user feedback, and assessments of changes in animal health practices. Ethical approval will be granted by the Bugema University Research Ethics Committee, with informed consent obtained from all participants. By expanding equitable access to trusted veterinary knowledge, Care4Animals will aim to strengthen livestock health, promote animal welfare, and improve agricultural productivity in underserved farming communities.
