Makerere University Animal Welfare Students Club (MUAWSC)

The Makerere University Animal Welfare Students’ Club aims to create passionate, knowledgeable animal welfare ambassadors in the country and the region and to promote animal welfare by strengthening the human-animal bond.
In recent years, animal welfare has been mostly known at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB) when students realized a gap in animal welfare information and knowledge among students in other colleges at the university.

In the 2023/2024 academic year MUAWSC was able to reach a number of Makerere University colleges through workshops, brochures, videos and articles as well as practical animal handling demonstration.

To bridge the gap in other colleges across the country, MUSAWC has planned similar activities in 2024/2025 to sensitize students and faculty at Bukalasa Agricultural college on the knowledge gaps in animal welfare and promote a culture of compassion and responsibility towards animals in the college community. In addition, students want to establish a students’ club and convince the school administration to include animal welfare in the curriculum to routinely teach animal welfare skills to students.
