Animal Welfare Competence Center for Africa

In January 2023, AWeCCA, the Animal Welfare Competence Center for Africa started its work.

The Animal Welfare Competence Center is an independent institution based at Makerere University Kampala, Uganda. The center is intended to collect and disseminate current findings on animal welfare, promote cooperation with other institutions from politics, development cooperation and research, identify new developments and thus become the nucleus of animal welfare activities on the African continent.

It was born out of the need to accelerate efforts to improve animal welfare in Africa. Animal Welfare has been underestimated as an effective driver of development especially among animal-based economies where challenges exist in relation to One Health, climate change, food security and prevention of pandemics and epidemics. The Center is the first of its kind on the African continent to use academic knowledge as a driving force for advances in animal welfare legislation, education, research and community outreach. The Center sees itself as a place of innovation on animal welfare issues, a service provider and think tank that reaches out to stakeholders with a very practical and cost-effective approach to address animal welfare challenges in various societal sectors across Africa.

With its collaborative approach, AWeCCA works with partners from all disciplines and areas of work to jointly deliver holistic solutions to current threats to animals and people.

AWeCCA has been founded as a public-private partnership of WTS and Makerere University.
