Latin American Academic Network for Animal Welfare
Animal Welfare has become an increasingly important topic in Latin America following worldwide trends towards better human-animal relationships, ethical treatment, and protection of animals.
Animal health professionals play a unique role as advocates for good animal welfare. However, animal welfare education remains very heterogeneous in the Latin American region: Some universities have made great advancements in the last decades, thanks to the work of dedicated lecturers and specialised research hubs whereas other institutions have not yet included animal welfare science into the curricula in sufficient quantity and quality.
As a result of a diagnostic research conducted by WTS in 2023-2024, a network of teachers and researchers was funded to bring together motivated educational staff from less experienced universities and colleges and animal welfare experts in the region.
The Latin American Academic Network for Animal Welfare is an exchange platform to activate and enhance existing networks, disseminate information and share local experiences and research, and provide capacity building opportunities, among others.
The Felt Map platform, displayed on the top of this page, is designed to help make animal welfare research, education and networking opportunities in Latin America more visible, thus support connection and collaboration between colleagues and institutions.
